QUOTE: Re: Suffering in the name of God

History, Quotes — Brian @ 11:25 pm

“Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.” Isaiah 13:15-16

EDITED: An apparently made up Bible verse was removed and replaced with this one (which is correct).

  1. Charming. How come you don’t find quotes like these in religious greeting cards…?

    There’s an idea. A non-believer produced line of religious greeting cards. Awesome.

  2. While that quote sounds appropriately horrifying, I decided to do a quick check on several online bibles, different versions of them, etc., and was unable to find that quote at all. In fact, Psalms 5: 4-10 reads something like this:

    5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight:
    thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

    6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing:
    the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

    7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy:
    and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.

    8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies;
    make thy way straight before my face.

    9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;
    their inward part is very wickedness;
    their throat is an open sepulchre;
    they flatter with their tongue.

    10 Destroy thou them, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
    cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions;
    for they have rebelled against thee.

    Quite a big difference, huh? I kept searching through different versions online, and not a single one had the quoted phrase in it. I then did a Google search, and the only other mention of that quote I could find was as part of the discussionof a book review in Richard Dawkins’ site: http://richarddawkins.net/article,640,Review-of-The-Quotable-Atheist,-Jack-Huberman-Nation-Books

    The folks there weren’t able to find that quote in any of their bibles either, looks like. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an atheist myself, go read my ranitngs on my blog to learn just how strongly I feel that religion is a negative force in society. That said, however, using incorrect or false quotes isn’t going to help our case. Of course, if you have a link to a proper source for that quote, I’d love to see it, since that’s definetly a quote I’d love to use on my own site!

  3. @ Katsushiro: Huh, that’s interesting. I didn’t think to check it out. I got it out of a quote book. I just checked my King James Version and it was the same as what you posted. I’m going to check all the surrounding chapters.

  4. Well, after skimming most of Psalms I’d have to say that this quote either doesn’t exist or was taken from a obscure version of the bible.

    Here are some quotes from the Bible that actually exist if anyone is interested:

    I’m going to edit the post with a new verse.

  5. Well done, with the change, and that quote makes my point: the bible has enough horrible things in it without needing to use made-up ones. :)

    Meh, totally not my cup of tea (don’t give a flying fairy fish for Satanist theatrics), but there you go.
