Null,

Yup. They keep meticulous records of their membership so that they can keep claiming that their church is growing. In fact, many, many people on their membership roles are inactive and have no intention of returning.

Mono,

Yeah, I don't really expect anyone at church headquarters to give the letter much attention. But, from what I understand, your letter of resignation is then forwarded to your local bishop who may try to contact you. I would like my bishop to know my reasons for leaving the church. Besides all that, I found it a cathartic exercise.

I was a Mormon too, and still technically a Mormon since I don't feel like writing them. If I did, I don't think I'd write 5 pages. I don't know who reads the resignation letters but I suspect 5 pages would be more than he'd be willing to read, especially if the 5 pages contain any slight criticisms of Mormonism. No doubt resignation letter reader will be very well trained in the religious art of being able to ignore facts that contradict their beliefs or at least interpret anything not published by the church as lies manufactured by the anti-Mormon conspiracy organization whose members are jealous of or mad at the LDS church.

They don't put you on their list when you're born, but when they assume you're old enough to make an educated decision free of parental pressure, which is eight years old of course.
